The Story of Lord Jagannath
The journey of Prabhu Jagannath begins with the Malwa King Indradyumna. Indradyumna was a very pious worshipper of Lord Vishnu. One day, he wished to have the darshan of the greatest form of Narayana. In his dreams, Vishnu instructed him to go to Puri, where there would be a rare log washed ashore, from which he would carve out the idol.
Receiving a cue from the tribal chief Viswavasu and the great architect Vishwakarma himself, the king proceeded with the work on the carvings of the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra.
However, all that had to be done over the next 21 days was without anyone entering or disturbing their work. However, King Indradyumna could not resist his impatience; he opened the door and, in so doing, ruined all chances of completion; the idols were left uncompleted with busted hands and legs.
The Mythological Significance of Lord Jagannath
Jagannath is one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu; Balabhadra and Subhadra are his incarnations.
