Kumbh Mela Celebrations in Various Indian Locations

Kumbh Mela is celebrated in 4 different locations in India. These places are chosen because of a story in our mythological records. It is said that when Samudra Manthan took place, 4 drops of Amrit fell on these 4 places. Here, Samudra Manthan is the churning of the divine ocean and Amrit means the nectar of immortality. These cities are now known as Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The Kumbh Mela switches locations every 4 years. Way more exciting than simply booking puja for education, isn’t it?

Story Behind Samudra Manthan – How Kumbh Mela Came to be

Gods and demons were always living in a constant state of war at one time. Naturally, when they heard of the ocean hiding treasures, they rushed to obtain it so they could use it against the other. The treasures also featured 2 secret assets – the Amrit and the Halahala.

We already told you what Amrit is. Halahala, or Kalakuta, is a poison which has the potential of ending the world. Neither the gods nor the demons could churn the ocean without each other’s help. This was why they formed an alliance previously unheard of. They agreed to share all the treasures equally.

Amrit was wanted by both the clans, which led to Lord Vishnu taking the form of Mohini. He tricked the demons into handing over the Amrit to the Gods. Meanwhile, Gods who were worried about the poison destroying the world approached Lord Shiva.

He drank the poison without any concern for his well – being. And his wife Parvati had to hold his throat to stop the poison from affecting his body. The poison collected at his throat, making it turn blue and earning Lord Shiva the name Neel Kanth.

Maha Kumbh Living Arrangements

To accommodate the massive number of people coming in for the event, Prayagraj established a temporary city! It takes up an area of about 4000 hectares. And in this area, there are 150,000 tents with proper sanitation facilities.

Security Arrangements at the Maha Kumbh Mela

About 40,000 police officers are deployed at strategic points throughout the area. These usually are places prone to high crowds and massive stampedes. AI powered surveillance systems, emergency response systems and barricades are set up at appropriate locations in the area.
