Kalashtami 2025: Date, Vidhi, Significance & What Not to Do

Get ready to embrace Kalashtami or Bhairav Ashtami with our reputable puja portal, Online Temple, a Hindu sacred festival for Lord Kaal Bhairav, a fierce and guardian manifestation of Lord Shiva. It comes on the Ashtami Tithi during Krishna Paksha each month. Phalguna month Kalashtami in 2025 will occur on Thursday, February 20, from 9:58 AM until February 21 at 11:57 AM.

This sacred event is spiritually significant. Devotees observe fasting and prayer to attain protection, courage, and negativity removal from life. The most significant Kalashtami in 2025, Kalabhairav Jayanti, will fall on Wednesday, November 12. We offer Online Hindu Puja Service to carry out rites from the comfort of your home.

Kalashtami 2025 Puja Timings

Do the Kalashtami puja on February 20 on Udaya Tithi for the greatest spiritual gain. Devotees wake up beforehand, bathe, and begin their rituals during the morning hours.

The fast is traditionally broken after moonrise. Numerous addicts stay over all night in devotion — a practice known as Jagaran.

Rituals and Puja Vidhi

Kalashtami begins with early morning medications. Worshippers wear clean clothes and set up a sacred space for Lord Kaal Bhairav. That’s how they perform the puja.

Offer incense, mustard oil, painting lights, and fruits to the deity.

Recite the Kalabhairav Ashtakam and chant mantras.

Hear or read the Kalashtami Vrat Katha.

Observe a fast either completely or partially with fruits and water.

Make Offerings of  Modak, kheer, or sesame sweets before breaking the fast.

Break the fast after seeing the moon.

Feed black tykes and contribute to the poor.

Take a holy dip in sacred gutters if possible.

Perform a Tarpan to recognise ancestors.

Devotees worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with Kaal Bhairav to gain divine blessings.

Kalashtami 2025 Significance

Kalashtami is not just a ritual—it’s a potent spiritual instrument. Devoting to Lord Bhairav is said to:

Destroy obstacles and fears.

Grant divine shield from evil influences.

Enhance inner strength and spiritual awareness.

Eliminate the ill effects of Rahu and Shani.

Release peace, success, and good health.

Honour time and karma, as Bhairav governs the flow of time.

Worshippers also practice charity on this day. Giving food, garments, or ghee gives the fast a more positive effect.

Things to Avoid in Kalashtami

To gain the complete benefit of Kalashtami, devotees should follow some dos and don’ts:

Avoid alcoholic beverages and non-vegetarian food.

Don’t use bad language or talk harshly.

Avoid lying, jealousy, and anger.

Don’t hurt animals or any living creature.

Keep a peaceful and pure mind throughout the day.

These prohibitions keep the spirit pure and raise concentration during worship.

Kalabhairav Vrat Katha

According to Katha, a fight arose between the Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—over supremacy. In pride, Lord Brahma offended Lord Shiva, infuriating him. Out of Shiva’s wrath came a terrible form—Lord Kalabhairav.

To teach Brahma a lesson, Kalabhairav cut off one of Brahma’s five heads. Cutting a creator’s head was a serious sin, or Brahmahatya. Kalabhairav had to roam the world carrying Brahma’s skull (kapal) in his hand as a beggar to purify himself for this sin.

He eventually arrived at Kashi (Varanasi), where the skull dropped from his hand at last, and he was relieved of the sin. Kashi is ever since thought to be the permanent residence of Lord Kalabhairav, and he is revered there as the Kshetrapal (guardian deity).
