Story behind the Vat Purnima Vrat

Brahma Vaivarta Puran tells you the full story behind this fasting. King Vaivarta got a beautiful baby daughter after many, many years of prayers. They called her Savitri. Once she grew up, her marriage became a cause of concern. They looked for many suitable grooms but nobody was fit enough for her. So, the king asked Savitri to find herself a groom.

She found Satyavan during her journey, and chose him. When Narad heard about this, he cautioned the King that the chosen groom would only live 1 year from then onwards. King Vaivarta tried to dissuade his daughter many times, but her heart was set. Hence, the marriage happened.

When the time of his demise drew near, Savitri began fasting and worshipping the gods for 3 continuous days. On the foretold day of his demise, they both went into the forest to collect firewood. But Satyavan began having excruciating pain when he climbed atop a tree. Savitri saw the grim reality.

Placing his head on her lap, she comforted him until his last breath. But, when the minions of Death arrived, she refused to let his soul leave the body. Unable to do anything about her, the minions reported this to Yamraj, the God of Death. He arrived to take Satyavan himself.

Savitri followed him back when he took her husband’s soul. Moved by her sincerity, he decided to grant her 3 wishes. This was when Savitri asked for the boon of many children. After he granted it, Savitri told him that his boon cannot be fulfilled unless he returns Satyavan’s soul. Her unwavering faith and dedication made Yamraj concede to her. The couple returned to their new life happily.
