One of the Supreme Deities and a part of the Holy Trinity of Beings, Vishnu is also the ‘Preserver of the Universe’. Having more than a thousand names, it is considered auspicious when a devotee chants or listens to the names together in succession.
Vishnu Sahasranama Puja is the recital of the 1000 names of Vishnu. This online puja is also known as Sahasranam in present Hindi dialect and Sahasranamam in the South Indian dialect. With every name of his, a deeper meaning and a legend is connected as there are numerous forms of Vishnu to have done various good deeds on Earth.
Vishnu Sahasranama is one of the most powerful prayers of Vishnu as it includes an online Jaap of his names. Sahasranama is an important part of Mahabharata because of Bhishma Pitamah, grandfather of Kauravs and Pandavs, who in the Kurukshetra war was lying on his deathbed.
With his death, an era of intelligence and knowledge came to an abrupt end. Krishna advised Yudhishthir to look for Bhishma’s guidance in all aspects of life.
Amidst the dialog, because of Yudhisthir’s inquiries, i.e., who is a definitive Supreme reality of the creation; by revering whom a man accomplishes salvation; and what is the least demanding path by which humanity can get everlasting satisfaction, endless peace and get to be free from hopelessness and distress, Bhishma said thousand names of Lord Vishnu and attained Moksh.
The puja and Parayana (Parayanam) is done anytime- no Muhurat is needed for performing the puja. If being held online, the Vishnu Sahasranama online puja has to be done in the devotee’s name and the names are chanted on their behalf.
