Navratri puja is dedicated to the worship of nine different forms of Goddess Durga for 9 days. The Chaitra Navratri puja begins in the lunar month of Chaitra, i.e. March- April. The ninth day of the puja begins with worshipping Goddess Siddhidatri.

Siddhidatri is the 9th form of Goddess Durga. She is either seated on a fully bloomed lotus or a lion. She has four hands that hold a discus, conch shell, mace, and lotus. She is the mool roop (true form) of Parvati, wife of Shiva.

She possesses 8 siddhis (supernatural powers) – called Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakambya, Ishitva and Vashitva.

Anima means reducing one’s body to the size of an atom; Mahima means expanding one’s body to an infinitely large size; Garima means becoming infinitely heavy; Laghima means becoming weightless; Prapti means having omnipresence; Prakambya achieving whatever one desire; Ishitva means possessing absolute lordship; and Vashitva means having the power to subjugate all.

When her name is divided, it forms Siddhi and Datri. Siddhi means supernatural power and datri means giver or awarder. Like her name, she fulfills all the divine aspirations and completes the wishes of her devotees.

Since Shiva gained all the 8 siddhis by worshipping the Goddess, it is believed that half of Shiva’s body is of Goddess Siddhidatri and hence, he is also called Ardhnarishwar.

In this form, Goddess Durga removes ignorance and provides knowledge. She is surrounded by Siddhas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Devas (Gods) and Asura (Demons) who worship her. The Siddhi that she provides is the realization that only she exists. She is the mistress of all achievements and perfections.

One of the popular legends states that Goddess Siddhidatri was the first being to ever grace the universe of darkness. She gave birth to the Trinity of Gods- Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and told them to contemplate their role in creating the universe. Following her advice, the gods sat by the bank of the ocean and did so.

Pleased by their penance, the Supreme Goddess appeared in the form of Goddess Siddhidatri and bestowed her blessings upon the Tridev (three gods). She created 2 of her clones and gave them as consorts to Brahma and Vishnu as Goddess Saraswati and Lakshmi respectively.

For Shiva, she herself was born as Sati and then reborn as Parvati to be his consort. Goddess Siddhidhatri entrusted Brahma to take up the role as the creator of worlds, Vishnu with the role of preserving the creation and its creatures, and Shiva with the role of destroying the worlds when it is time.

She tells them that their powers are in the forms of their respective wives/ consorts, who will help them in achieving their tasks. The Goddess assured them that she will also provide them divine powers, which will also help them fulfill their duties.

Saying this, she bestowed to them eight supernatural powers- named Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakambya, Ishitva and Vashitva. Apart from the supreme 8 siddhis, she bestowed upon them nine treasures and ten other kinds of supernatural powers, thus helping them create the entire universe, replete with solar systems.

या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ सिद्धिदात्री रूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः।

Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Siddhidatri Rupena Sanstha.
