The Goddess Gayatri is another form of Saraswati and the consort of God Brahma. She is depicted as being seated on a blooming red lotus, with 5 heads and 10 eyes to cast her sight in all directions. Her heads represent the Panch Vayu or Panch Pran- Saman, Udan, Pran, Apan and Vyan.

They can alternatively, also represent the 5 tattvas- Prithvi (earth), Vayu (air), Jal (water), Aakash (sky/ ether) and Tej (fire). She has 10 arms, holding all weapons of the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). The arms hold a shankh, chakra, varad, kamal, kash, abhay, ujjwal patra (utensil), ankush and rudraksh mala.

Gayatri is the divine tri- representation of the essences of the Goddesses Maha Lakshmi, Maha Saraswati and Maha Kali. The Gaya in Gayatri literally translates to hymn of wisdom and Tri translates to the combined cores of the 3 Goddesses.

Legend Behind the Gayatri Mantra

According to Padma Puran, Brahma wanted to conduct a Yagya (fire sacrifice) after annihilating a demon. However, to perform the Yagya, he needed to have his wife Saraswati by his side to conduct the ceremony with him. However, she was waiting for Parvati, Lakshmi and Indrani, and hence was late. In anger, Brahma asked Indra and the priests to find him a suitable girl for marriage so that the Yagya can begin.

Indra found a beautiful milkmaid’s daughter, who resided in the Himalayan regions of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. She was purified by the touch of a cow, and thus, even Shiva and Vishnu approved of her as she was reborn after being sanctified by a cow as Gayatri. Hence, Brahma married his consort and completed the Yagya successfully. Later, they understood that Gayatri was a form of Saraswati.

Gayatri Mantra is a great purifier on the Earth, and anyone who worships her with immense faith and devotion is on their way to self- reflection and enlightenment. She is regarded as the divine mother of the universe, and of the 4 Vedas in Hindu religion.

The mantra is ideal to keep your mind calm, and should be chanted 3 times a day. Book Gayatri pujas online with e-puja services of Online temple. With online Jaap and online puja rituals, you receive the divine blessings of Goddess Gayatri for both yourself and your close ones.
