The Gangaur festival is held during the month of Chaitra. The cultural extravaganza that goes with it begins on the first day of Chaitra month. The celebration of Holi comes after that. The term “Gangaur” is made up of two words: “Gan” and “Gaur”. “Gan” is associated with Lord Shiva, but “Gaur” or “Gavar” refers to Goddess Gauri or Parvati, Shiva’s consort.
During the event, a few official rituals are adhered to: Get up early in the morning Preparing and arranging Dubh (a type of grass) for the Puja. Ghudlias are earthen pots with several holes and a bulb within. During this procession, they sing many happy songs and dance to the rhythm of their hearts. They also get gifts from their elders. From the eighth day forward, the clay or wooden gods placed in the basket are worshipped. However, other towns do not maintain the baskets. The females offer water to the Goddess while fasting till the afternoon.
